Jones Carries Early Load, Kennedy Hangs On, 28-24

Jason Jones ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns in 24 carries, and Kennedy High held on for a 28-24 victory over San Fernando in a Northwest Valley Conference game Friday night at San Fernando.

Jones, a senior tailback, scored on runs of 13 and 28 yards, as Kennedy (5-3, 3-2 in conference play) built a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

San Fernando (4-4, 1-4) rallied in the fourth quarter. Major Caldwell ran 39 yards for a touchdown to cut the Golden Cougars’ lead to 28-18.

San Fernando recovered an onside kick with 10 minutes to play. Eleven plays later, Larry Brown scored on a six-yard run on fourth and five with 5:51 to play.

San Fernando had one final possession but turned the ball over on downs at its 45-yard line with 1:51 to play.

“It’s like this every time we play them,” Kennedy Coach Bob Francola said.

Brown completed seven of 18 passes for 115 yards. Brown also had touchdown runs of five and three yards. Brown threw two interceptions, both to David Burney, in the first and second quarter.

Kennedy quarterback Ruben Zaragoza completed 10 of 13 passes for 74 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown pass to Daron Taylor early in the third quarter that gave the Golden Cougars a 28-6 lead. The play capped a 12-play, 73-yard drive that consumed more than six minutes.

Jerome Williams of Kennedy rushed for 42 yards in five carries. Williams ran six yards for a touchdown to give the Golden Cougars a 21-0 lead.

San Fernando failed on four point-after attempts.
