Alemany Stuns Top-Ranked St. Paul, 26-17

Alemany High upset St. Paul, 26-17, in a Mission League opener Friday night at St. Paul, holding off a second-half rally by the Swordsmen after taking an 18-7 halftime lead.

The Indians (5-3) pulled off the shocker behind receiver Derek Goodman, who caught four passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns and also returned an interception for a touchdown.

Alemany tailback De’Andre Scott rushed 28 times for 151 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Casey Clausen completed 12 of 21 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, with one interception.

The Indians outgained St. Paul in total yards, 311-165. The Swordsmen (7-1) entered the game ranked No. 1 in Southern Section Division III and having outscored its opponents, 314-6, with six consecutive shutouts.

Alemany took a 12-0 lead on two Derek Goodman touchdowns in the first quarter. He scored six minutes into the game on a 34-yard reception from Deon Scott on a halfback option pass.

Less than a minute later, Goodman intercepted a St. Paul pass and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown.

St. Paul cut its deficit to 12-7 on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jon Montes to Mike Holloway late in the first quarter.

Alemany closed out the first-half scoring when Goodman caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Clausen with six minutes left in the second quarter.

St. Paul pulled to within 18-17 in the third quarter on a 22-yard touchdown run by Manueal Murillo and a 36-yard field goal by Jack Thomas.

However, De’Andre Scott put the game out of reach with a 19-yard touchdown run with 9:29 to play.
