Saints Win League Cross-Country Titles

Alfonso Leon finished first and teammate Juan Salgado took second to help Santa Ana win its second consecutive Golden West League boys’ cross-country championship Friday at Central Park.

Leon ran the three-mile course in 15 minutes 6 seconds and Salgado finished in 15:38. Leo Gordillo of Tustin was third in 15:53.

Santa Ana finished with 18 points, followed by Tustin (65), Saddleback (68), Servite (84) and Ocean View (149).

In the Golden West League girls’ cross-country finals:

Santa Ana wins--Ocean View’s Lisa Rotsel took first in 19:00 on the three-mile course at Central Park, but Santa Ana got the team victory with a second- and fourth-place finish.

Noemi Fuentes (19:07) finished second for the Saints and Kelly Dickerson of Tustin (19:28) was third.

Santa Ana finished with 31 points for its third consecutive league title. Tustin was second (45), Saddleback third (74), Rosary fourth (89), Ocean View fifth (132) and Westminster sixth (172).

In Century League girls’ golf:

Canyon 144, Foothill 156--Junior Beth Harold led Canyon (9-4, 6-0) to the league title with a birdie on the par 5 second hole at Tustin Ranch. Harold shot an eight-over 44.

Foothill’s Priscilla Park was the medalist with a 41.

In Orange League girls’ tennis:

Western 10 1/2, Valencia 10 1/2 (Western wins on games 89-77)--Joanne Eleopoulos , Sabrina Tanamal and Quang Tran all swept their singles sets to lead Western (6-4 in league). Valencia is 7-3 in league.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

No. 2 Corona del Mar 15, University 3--Leslie Damion and Kristen Griffith teamed for 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 doubles victories to lead Corona del Mar (12-3).

In Golden West League girls’ volleyball:

Saddleback 3, Santa Ana 2--Denise De La Rosa and Elisa Hernandez each had eight kills to lead Saddleback to its first league victory this season, 14-16, 15-6, 15-12, 10-15, 15-13.

Maggie Ruelas had 18 kills and Cynthia Luna added 15 to lead Santa Ana (5-8, 2-6).

In the Santa Barbara tournament:

Laguna Beach 3, Santa Barbara San Marcos 1--Kellie Cramm had 19 kills and Kristin Gunderson had 17 as Laguna Beach defeated San Marcos, ranked second in Division II and seventh in the state, 15-13, 6-15, 15-5, 15-12. Laguna Beach (16-9) later lost to Torrey Pines, 3-0, in the quarterfinals.
