Bad Bounce Gives Northridge 1-0 Loss

An own goal on a deflection of a crossing pass by Carolyn Hendrickson in the 51st minute sent Cal State Northridge to a 1-0 nonconference women’s soccer loss to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday in its opener at North Campus Stadium.

Hendrickson’s cross from the right wing caromed off the back of a Northridge defender and bounced inside the far post.

Northridge, which has lost 11 of 12 games dating to last season, did not impress Matador Coach Brian Wiesner.

“We had a lot of first-game jitters and mistakes,” said Wiesner, whose team was outshot, 7-2.

“Our passing was terrible and we allowed them to receive every pass they made in the first half.”

Wiesner credited defender Beth Hoiby with strong defensive play and said freshman midfielder Kerrie Clavadetscher was impressive on the wing.

“Beth played very hard,” Wiesner said. “She won balls in the air and made strong passes up the field.”

Northridge was 2-16 last season. Santa Barbara was 3-15-1.
