A new superintendent has been hired for the Beverly Hills Unified School District, board members said.

Robert Pellicone will start work in Beverly Hills on Oct. 1, said Virginia Maas, Beverly Hills school board president. His three-year contract is for $143,000 a year.

Pellicone has been superintendent at New York’s Eastchester Unified School District for the last seven years. He oversaw efforts to modernize school facilities there, a task that has been facing the Beverly Hills district for years.

In addition to addressing facilities problems, the district will look to Pellicone to develop curriculum and bring standardized test scores up, board members said.

Four Beverly Hills board members traveled to Eastchester, N.Y., to interview dozens of people who have worked with Pellicone before offering him the superintendent position, said board Vice President Richard Stone.

“We’re very high on him,” Maas said. “We really think he’s kind of the adrenaline that we needed to move the district forward.”

Former Beverly Hills Supt. Sol Levine resigned in February and left the position in June.
