Goossen Will Fight Goodson in Reseda Main Event Next Week

Middleweight P.J. Goossen of Van Nuys, scheduled to headline a card of local fighters Sept. 9 at the Reseda Country Club, will fight Stacy Lane Goodson in a 10-round main event.

Goossen, 18-1 with 13 knockouts, is a former state and International Boxing Organization champion.

Goodson, of Paris, Ark., is 18-18-2 with five knockouts.

Jimmy “The Stump” Buffo, a 5-foot-5 heavyweight and cousin of Goossen’s, is scheduled to fight on the undercard.

Also scheduled are a bout including heavyweight John Rizzo of Palmdale and a women’s bout with the competitors to be determined.

Michael Brignac, a junior wide receiver who transferred to Westlake High from Reseda last semester, has been denied varsity eligibility this season by the Southern Section after Reseda alleged undue influence, according to Southern Section Commissioner Dean Crowley.

Brignac is appealing the decision. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday before a three-member panel.

When a student seeks to transfer under open enrollment, the former school must sign a form indicating it believes no undue influence occurred. Reseda declined to sign the form, according to Crowley.

Reseda officials must attend Thursday’s hearing to explain their reasons.

Westlake vice principal Joseph Pawlick said he would not comment until after the hearing.

Brignac started as a sophomore in football and basketball at Reseda. He played youth football with Westlake quarterback Zac Wasserman.

TENNIS

Quinn Borchard of Rio Mesa High was part of the USTA Southern California contingent that won the championship of the Billie Jean King USA TeamTennis National Junior Invitational tournament last week in San Diego.

USTA Southern California, one of 16 coed teams of the top 14- to 18-year-olds in the nation, defeated USTA Intermountain in the final match, 46-33, and finished with a 5-0 tournament record.

BASEBALL

Jesse Kozlowski, a top pitcher as a sophomore at Simi Valley High last season, has transferred to Westlake.

Sign-ups are being taken for the California Beach Festival Longboard Surfing Championships scheduled for Sept. 19-20 at Surfers’ Point in Ventura.

The amateur contest features competition in a women’s open division and in six age divisions for men from 19 and under through 60 and older.

The field will be limited to 225 surfers. Admission to the California Beach Festival is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors. Anyone 12 and under will be admitted free.

Beginning golf classes for players 16 and older are scheduled for Thursdays from noon-1 p.m. Oct. 1-5 at Los Robles Golf Course in Thousand Oaks.

The 33rd annual Senior Olympic Gymnastics meet is scheduled for Sept. 27 at 12:45 p.m. in the Valley College Gymnastics Center in Van Nuys.

Competition is for adults 20 and older and includes all gymnastics events, plus a 20-foot rope climb.

There is a $2-per-event fee for participants. Admission is free.

Open workouts in preparation for the event will take place Tuesdays and Fridays from 7-10 p.m.
