A college employee who recently resigned returned to campus Thursday, shot and killed his former boss, then turned the gun on himself, authorities said.

Jesus “Jesse” Morfe, 50, of Colton shot and killed Jerry Morrison, 55, about 8 a.m. at San Bernardino Valley College, said Police Sgt. Scott Paterson.

Although classes were in session next door to the site of the shooting, no one else was wounded, Paterson said. Four people were in the immediate area.

Morfe was pronounced dead at Loma Linda University Medical Center of a gunshot wound to the head.

Morrison, a San Bernardino resident, was director of the campus’ Computing Services Center, said Norman Smith, the college’s director of administrative services.

Although police did not immediately determine a motive, Smith said Morfe had submitted his resignation Aug. 28. He was officially on paid vacation until the resignation took effect Sept. 30, Smith said.

Morrison’s son, Brian, said his father was a gentle man, nearing retirement.

“He was looking forward to having his retirement dreams be fulfilled, but one of his co-workers just decided he wasn’t going to allow it to happen, took out his aggression on my dad, and he’s going to cause my family a lot of pain and suffering,” he said.

Smith, who also is in charge of planning for facilities at the 13,000-student campus, said counselors were on hand to help students.
