Open Space Is in Headlands Plan

* Re “City Offers Headlands Plan; Developer Calls It Untenable” (July 25):

The spokesmen for Headlands Reserve LLC are conducting homeowner meetings to build support for their plan to develop the Dana Point Headlands.

Those who have attended their meetings and who are not familiar with the city’s Plan A [should] take note. Their plan is not a better version of Plan A, as they want [people] to believe.

Their plan fails to meet the conservation spirit of Plan A. It favors development over preservation of the natural open space, which includes our coastal sage scrub.

Their plan has more homes and only about 19 acres of natural open space compared to the 38 acres of Plan A. It destroys the Pacific pocket mouse habitat.

They sweeten their undersized natural open space by implying that it will be open for public use. They don’t get it. Open space is for Mother Nature to use. Public access can be obtained by existing easements.

Their plan is a reworked version of the old landowners’ plan. The city Plan A is the result of a series of public hearings and hard work by dedicated people. It is an excellent plan that provides a fair balance between homes, hotel, parks, and natural open space.
