With Doug Johnson recovering from a shoulder operation, sophomore Jesse Palmer threw for 301 yards and Terry Jackson ran for 127 for the Gators, 9-0 in openers since Steve Spurrier became their coach. Next: Northeast Louisiana.

NO. 4 NEBRASKA (2-0) BEAT ALA. BIRMINGHAM, 38-7

Starting quarterback Bobby Newcombe, who has a slight knee ligament tear, sat out and backup Eric Crouch ran for two touchdowns and passed for one for the Cornhuskers. The Blazers put up a fight until the fourth quarter. Next: at California.

NO. 5 MICHIGAN (0-1) LOST TO NOTRE DAME, 36-20

The Wolverines settled for too many field-goal attempts and let a 13-6 halftime lead get away. The key play came when Michigan’s Clarence Williams fumbled away a kickoff return after Notre Dame got within 13-9. Next: Syracuse.

NO. 6 KANSAS STATE (1-0) BEAT INDIANA ST., 66-0

Michael Bishop ran for two touchdowns and passed for one in leading the Wildcats, who came within a point of a school scoring record in this laugher against outclassed Indiana State. Next: Northern Illinois.

Cade McNown suddenly finds himself trailing in the Heisman race. Kentucky’s Tim Couch passed for 498 yards and seven touchdowns and Texas’ Ricky Williams ran for 215 yards and six touchdowns in 36 carries. Next: Texas.

NO. 8 ARIZ. ST. (0-1) LOST TO WASHINGTON, 42-38

This season opener may have turned out to be the “Pacific 10 Game of the Year.” Reggie Davis scored on a 63-yard pass play with 28 seconds left for Washington as host Sun Devils lost a heartbreaker. Next: at Brigham Young.

Big things are expected from the Tigers, who were 9-3 last season, beat Notre Dame, 27-9, in the Independence Bowl, and have tailback Kevin Faulk back. Their first opponent, Arkansas State, was 2-9 last season. Next: Arkansas State.

Tee Martin was no Peyton Manning but the former understudy played well enough for the Volunteers to eke out a victory on a short field goal as time expired. And things don’t get any easier. Next: Florida (Sept. 19).

NO. 11 WEST VIRGINIA (0-1) LOST TO OHIO ST., 34-17

“I hope that team is No. 1,” West Virginia Coach Don Nehlen said after his Mountaineers were dominated by the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes. “They have a lot of weapons on defense.” Next: Maryland (Sept. 19).

NO. 12 N. CAROLINA (0-1) LOST TO MIAMI (OHIO), 13-10

Freshman quarterback Ronald Curry, coming in after four plays when quarterback Oscar Davenport suffered a knee injury, ran up a 10-0 lead, but the RedHawks came back to win on John Scott’s 37-yard field goal. Next: at Stanford (Sept. 19).

NO. 13 PENN STATE (1-0) BEAT SO. MISSISSIPPI, 34-6

Curtis Enis is now a Chicago Bear, but the Nittany Lions got by without him, using a committee of runners to gain 255 yards in this victory. Cordell Mitchell led the way with 99 yards before spraining an ankle in the second half. Next: Bowling Green.

NO. 14 TEXAS A&M; (0-1) DID NOT PLAY

The Aggies got a well-deserved day off after losing to Florida State, 23-14, in the Kickoff Classic on Monday. Texas A&M;, which hasn’t beaten a Top Five team since 1975, was held to 33 yards in 31 rushes. Next: Louisiana Tech.

NO. 15 COLO. ST. (0-1) LOST TO COLORADO, 42-14

The Rams had won 10 in a row but were no match for Rick Neuheisel’s Buffaloes in the first college game played at Denver’s Mike High Stadium. The Rams led, 14-13, in the second half before the Buffaloes went on a rampage. Next: Nevada.

NO. 16 VIRGINIA (1-0) BEAT AUBURN, 19-0

The Cavaliers were impressive in winning Thursday night at Auburn, Ala. The defense dominated and quarterback Aaron Brooks ran the offense, passing for 220 yards, with 61 coming on a touchdown play. Next: Maryland.

NO. 17 SYRACUSE (0-1) LOST TO TENNESSEE, 34-33

Penalties kept the Orangemen from pulling off an upset. The toughest call came in the final two minutes with Syracuse leading, 33-31. Cornerback Will Allen was called for interference, giving the Volunteers new life. Next: at Michigan.

Brigham Young saves on game-film expenses--it plays the Sun Devils next weekend and the Huskies the week after that. BYU gave up 38 points to Alabama--it may not want to review Washington-Arizona State at all. Next: BYU (Sept. 19).

Quincy Carter became the first freshman to start at quarterback for the Bulldogs in more than 50 years, and he responded by throwing for 235 yards and three touchdowns in an easy win at Athens, Ga. Next: at South Carolina.

NO. 20 WISCONSIN (1-0) BEAT SAN DIEGO ST., 26-14

Playing without injured star running back Ron Dayne (sprained ankle), the Badgers fell behind but rallied behind quarterback Mike Samuel, who scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 47-yard run at San Diego. Next: Ohio U.

Wide receiver Sherrod Gideon caught 13 passes for 176 yards and became school’s all-time leader in receptions (100) and yards (1,684). But he couldn’t break loose against the Nittany Lions. Next: Northwestern State.

Tailback Sedrick Irvin was limited to 66 yards in 12 carries and the Ducks racked up 590 yards in total offense against the Spartans, who lost their season opener, 23-16, to Colorado State the previous Saturday. Next: Notre Dame.
