AURORA, Colo. — A 17-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday as one of two alleged triggermen in a shooting rampage that left six people, including the other homicide suspect, dead.
The pair, wielding shotguns and wearing bandannas, killed five people in two homes a few blocks apart, police said.
Then one of the boys apparently finished off the other, officers added.
The surviving suspect, whose name was not disclosed, was jailed on suspicion of six counts of first-degree murder.
All six victims and the 17-year-old boy knew each other. But police were unsure what triggered the killing spree.
“The motive is really the $64,000 question,” police spokesman Bob Stef said.
In one home Monday, police found the bodies of Penny Medla, a woman in her 30s; Greg Medla, believed to be her 18-year-old son; and his 16-year-old girlfriend. Penny Medla’s 6-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son were not hurt.
Witnesses told officers that Michael Martinez, 18, and another teenage boy walked to a house, opened fire then walked out.
At a townhouse complex six blocks away, police found the bodies of two teenage boys. Police revealed no more information about them.
The body of Michael Martinez, 18, was found in a field 10 miles away. He had been shot several times.
Stef said investigators believe the 17-year-old killed Martinez. Both had juvenile records.
The 17-year-old was arrested at his home early Tuesday.
