Actress Jennifer Paz, of “Miss Saigon” fame, is among the artists scheduled to appear during the Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. The two-day event features music, dance, arts and crafts, film, video presentations and food.

noon: Jazz

In the heart of the Los Angeles jazz community, the annual Leimert Park Jazz Festival is the most spirited of neighborhood fests. This year’s edition, the fourth, places an emphasis on the voice with soulful singer Dwight Trible and his band Oasis, blues vocalist Sweet Baby J’ai, poet Kamau Daood and his Army of Healers, along with pianist Horace Tapscott, bassist Art Davis and others. Food, folk art vendors and the eclectic Leimert merchants add to the two-day event.

“Paul Robeson: Artist and Citizen” celebrates the centennial of the birth of the singer, stage actor and motion picture star who became one of America’s most politically engaged artists of the 20th century. The exhibition at the California African-American Museum includes more than 150 items, including photographs, sculpture, works on paper, historical artifacts, theater programs, books and personal objects. Two films, “The Tallest Tree in the Forest” and “Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist,” will be shown intermittently throughout opening day.

1pm: Movies

“Les Vampires,” French master Louis Feuillade’s classic silent horror series, first released in 1915-16, will screen in its entirety (seven hours) in a rare program at the Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo. All 10 of the episodes have been restored by silent film restoration expert David Shepard. The restoration also includes a full orchestral score compiled and directed by Robert Israel.

Phyllis Frelich, acclaimed for her work in Mark Medoff’s Tony-winning play, “Children of a Lesser God,” teams with Heather Tom for the Los Angeles premiere of Medoff’s new play “Gila” about AIDS research scientists in conflict.

The public will have rare access to the Pacific Design Center as the building known as the “blue whale” hosts Design Center Saturday, an open house benefiting the Women’s Information Network Against Breast Cancer. With showroom presentations, drop-in design clinics and lectures, participants can ponder redecoration with professional guidance as prominent interior designers participate in the day’s events.
