LAPD Will Honor Parent Volunteers
Parent volunteers who have trained and served as crossing guards in a pilot program at Fair Avenue Elementary School in North Hollywood will be honored Friday by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Nineteen volunteers will receive certificates for completing and taking part in the Safe Crossings Program, established by the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division in coordination with Maxine Matlen, principal at Fair Avenue, and Rosalba Manrique, assistant principal.
“It’s a program that has given parents a high-profile leadership role in the school community,” Matlen said. “This has given them an important way of contributing to school safety.”
Since Aug. 31, at least three parent volunteers have provided assistance to students after school on the corner of Fair Avenue and Kittridge Street, Matlen said.
The school decided to implement the program after it did not qualify for crossing guards provided by the city, she added.
“These parents, with the training that we gave them as crossing guards, have come a long way in such a short time,” said Santiago L. Rosales, traffic safety officer of the division who taught the Spanish-speaking parents in the Safe Crossing Program. Rosales was assisted by safety Officers Erwin Stowell and Norman Kellems.
The presentation will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Fair Avenue Elementary School, 6501 Fair Ave., North Hollywood.
