That Silly Philly Guy

Share

A few comments for that guy from Philadelphia who wrote in last week criticizing L.A as a sports town:

In the last 15 years, L.A. has won three championships in pro basketball, one in college basketball, one in pro football, and one in baseball. Philadelphia has that Villanova fluke and nothing else.

L.A. has no pro football team and Philadelphia has the Eagles. Who’s really worse off?

L.A. has hosted two Olympics, seven Super Bowls, 82 Rose Bowls and a World Cup final. Philadelphia’s claim to fame is that Bill Cosby track meet.

There are dozens of one-way flights from LAX to Philadelphia every day. If he doesn’t care for the climate or people here, he should get on one of them.

I want to express my appreciation to Mike McMahon for taking the time, before he left town, to tell all us palm trees how to behave. Returning the favor, I’d like to explain that the thing that drives L.A. is that we go our own way, based on our well-founded indifference to doing something just because that’s the way it’s always been done someplace else. If he ever grows up, he may understand the freedom of independent thinking, and not be such a stereotype. Until then, Mikey baby, it’s OK with us if you want to take your shallow intellect someplace else where it’ll be appreciated. Somehow, I’m sure we’ll be able to muddle along without you.
