The 49ers had the NFL’s top-ranked defense last season and thought they could be just as good this season. But they played conservatively against the Jets, and it hurt them. Steve Mariucci is committed to running the ball, and the 49ers had over 200 yards rushing against the Jets, including 96 by Garrison Hearst on one play. But with Jerry Rice back, the 49ers also have one of the most talented groups of receivers in the league.
