Binky Patrol Seeks Volunteers for Event

Binky Patrol, a gathering of crafters who make blankets for children and teens, will resume stitching Oct. 10 at the Newport-Mesa Assistance League headquarters.

Participants in the Bink-a-Thon will make as many blankets as possible. Children can paint blanket squares.

The nonprofit Binky Patrol organization was founded in 1996 by Susan Jenkins of South Laguna. The group makes blankets for children with HIV/AIDS and other terminal and chronic illnesses, as well as for those who have been abused or are in foster care.

Jenkins took the name “binky” from what many young children call a special blanket.

Blankets from this drive will go to county youths, she said.

With more than 30 chapters nationwide, 3,000 volunteers have produced 17,800 binkies.

Moore’s Sewing Center of Mission Viejo will supply sewing machines, and Wahoo’s Fish Tacos will cater.

Volunteers and pledges are still needed. The event goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Assistance League is at 2220 Fairview Road. Information: (949) 499-BINK.
