POETRY READING: Emerson Unitarian Church, 7304 Jordan Ave., Canoga Park, will present Iranian poet Partow Nooriala, who will read her poetry in English and Farsi at 4:30 p.m. today. ROSH HASHANA SERVICES: In honor of Israel’s 50th anniversary, Young Israel of Northridge, 17511 Devonshire St., will hold Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services at no charge. Rosh Hashana services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, 8 a.m. Monday, and 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday. Yom Kippur services will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 and 8 a.m. Sept. 30.

“It has always been Young Israel’s policy not to turn anyone away due to finances,” said Lyle R. Weisman, president of Young Israel. “What we value is the participation of Jews from all walks of life.”

110TH ANNIVERSARY: The oldest Protestant church in the West Valley, Chatsworth United Methodist Church, 10824 Topanga Canyon Blvd., will celebrate its 110th anniversary from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. JAZZ CONCERT: First Lutheran Church, 1300 E. Colorado Blvd., Glendale, will host a jazz celebration with the Robert Kyle Quartet at 5 p.m. Sunday. LECTURE SERIES: Woodland Hills Community Church, 21338 Dumetz Road, will host Dr. Culver Nelson, Jesus Seminar Fellow and retired minister, in a lecture series entitled “Millennia Mania.” The series begins 7 p.m. Friday with “Armageddon: Metaphor or Expectations?” followed by two lectures Sept. 26; at 9 a.m. there will be a lecture called “Daniel: Moralizing or Event?” and at 11 a.m., one entitled “Revelation: Mystery or Eventuality?” The cost is $10 for the Friday lecture, and $15 for each of the Sept. 26 lectures, or $20 for both lectures Saturday.
