The Spirit of ’88 Was Something Special

As a young man, I saw the Dodgers play in the Coliseum. I’ve seen a Sandy Koufax no-hitter, Fernando’s no-hitter. I’ve experienced many wonderful moments at the hands of the Dodgers, but there will never be a team or a season like the 1988 Dodgers.

I had to keep wiping the tears from my eyes while reading Tim Kawakami’s superb look back at the magic, golden season [Sept. 15]. Thanks for bringing back those memories. Three cheers and a raised fist to Tim Kawakami.

As the 1998 season draws mercifully to a close for us decade-suffering Dodger fans, it was with vivid remembrance that my wife and I read Tim Kawakami’s “Destiny’s Team.”

Not married at the time, we had our fledgling relationship cemented by that magical ’88 season. Every improbable victory gave me cause to call her (as if I needed one). Scioscia’s miracle home run, equally amazing as Gibby’s Game 1 crippled swat; the antics of the Stuntmen; Hershiser’s unbelievable streak. Man, it was all a Hollywood “B” movie script and then some. William Bendix would need to be resurrected to play Tommy.

Married now for seven years, our only wish is that something just as magical, just as improbable, happens again before, say, our 40th or 50th anniversary.
