A passenger on the long-range sportfishing vessel Red Rooster III out of San Diego was reported missing Wednesday in Mexican waters and is presumed dead.

Feran McGirt, 24, of Oklahoma was last seen by a crew member at the stern at 1:15 a.m., and an extensive search was launched when she was discovered missing at about 5:20 a.m., said chief warrant officer Bernie Ramirez of the United States Coast Guard.

The boat was about 50 miles southwest of the Baja California resort city of Cabo San Lucas at the time. It returned to San Diego on Sunday morning and the passengers and crew were interviewed by agents from the Coast Guard and FBI.

Ramirez said “all the indicators at this point lead toward a probable suicide,” but Jan Caldwell, a special agent for the FBI, said foul play has not been ruled out.
