Vons Funds Computer Training for Teachers

The Vons supermarket chain announced a $6.1-million gift Wednesday to fund a new program aimed at improving teachers’ skills and student performance in schools across Southern and Central California.

The Teach the Teacher Collaborative will consist of one-week training sessions during the summer to train elementary and secondary school teachers to use computer technology to track student performance. Teachers also will learn how to use the Internet to create lesson plans and to help students achieve goals, said James S. Lanich, co-chairman of the program.

The program, which will focus on reading and math, is not just about having computers in the classroom but “how you use the machine to develop the individual,” said Donald Ingwerson, superintendent of the Los Angeles County office of education.

Vons’ gift will fund the program for the first two years, allowing 865 teachers from 14 counties to participate this summer and about 1,600 teachers next summer, program officials said.
