No Midnight Magic for Dodgers

Extra-inning games are typically draining, and the Dodgers were spent after a 7-6, 16-inning loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday morning at Bank One Ballpark.

The longest game in the Diamondbacks’ two-year history began Tuesday night at 7:05 and ended 19 minutes after midnight Wednesday. Arizona scored three runs in the bottom of the 16th, winning the second game in the four-game series after routing the Dodgers, 12-6, in the opener.

Tony Batista scored the winning run from second base on double into the left-field corner by Dante Powell, after Kelly Stinnett tied the score with a two-run, pinch-hit home run after the Dodgers scored twice in the top of the inning to go ahead, 6-4, with the help of two Diamondback errors.

“Well, that was a long one,” Manager Davey Johnson said after the 5-hour 14-minute game. “It was a great team effort to get back into it [after trailing, 4-2, in the ninth], we just couldn’t get a couple of things to go our way when we needed.”
