Roger Clemens’ worst start in nearly a year stopped the New York Yankees’ winning streak, not his.

Brady Anderson doubled and scored the go-ahead run against Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning Thursday night, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Yankees, 9-7, at New York to stop the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak.

“I didn’t feel I had any velocity. Movement and location was horrible,” said Clemens, pounded for seven runs and 11 hits in three-plus innings.

Clemens has won 16 consecutive decisions since May 29--one short of the American League record--and gets to try to tie it again next week against the Texas Rangers.

“I’m not worried about that streak,” he said.

Albert Belle, only 12 for 66 (.182) with one homer against Clemens before Thursday, homered twice against the Rocket and Anderson connected once.

“They put that many runs up for you, you’ve got to make it stand up,” Clemens said.

Baltimore, which outhit the Yankees, 18-10, stopped New York’s 12-game home winning streak dating to last season.

Baltimore ended a nine-game skid at Yankee Stadium and a three-game losing streak overall.

Chicago 4, Boston 0--John Snyder resumed his domination of the Red Sox by giving up two hits in six innings at Boston as the White Sox ended a five-game losing streak.

Snyder, whose first major league victory came in Fenway Park last July 4, is 3-0 against Boston and has given up no runs in 19 2/3 innings. He prevented the Red Sox (6-2) from achieving their best start since 1920.

Greg Norton drove in two of Chicago’s runs on a double and a forceout. The first run came in on a passed ball by Scott Hatteberg.

Snyder (1-1) outdueled Pedro Martinez (2-1), who struck out 10 and walked one in seven innings. Martinez gave up six hits and two earned runs.

Texas 4, Seattle 3--Luis Alicea’s RBI double in the 10th inning at Seattle gave the Rangers their first series sweep at the Kingdome in eight years.

Luis Alicea, who entered the game in a two-for-15 slump, went three for five with two RBIs and scored two runs.

Lee Stevens led off the 10th with a single against John Halama (0-1). One out later, Alicea lined a double to right-center to score pinch-runner Tom Goodwin.

Tim Crabtree (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth and John Wetteland pitched the 10th for his fourth save.

Minnesota 8, Detroit 6--Corey Koskie homered twice, and fellow rookies Torii Hunter and Chad Allen each hit their first major league homers for the Twins at Detroit.
