Braves Tee Off on Rockies, 20-5

Andruw Jones went five for six with a home run, triple and a career-high six RBIs, and the Braves set an Atlanta record for runs by routing the Colorado Rockies, 20-5, Sunday.

With a 10-run ninth inning, Atlanta topped its previous high of 19 runs against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on April 15, 1994. The franchise record since 1900 is 23 by the Milwaukee Braves against the Cubs on Sept. 2, 1957.

The Braves had 24 hits, one short of the Atlanta and two shy of the franchise record.

Jones hit an infield single in the first, a two-run homer in the third, a single in the fourth, an RBI single in the eighth and a two-run triple in the ninth.

Eddie Perez also went five for six, and Randall Simon went three for three with his first major league homer. Brian Jordan, Chipper Jones and Brian Hunter also homered for Atlanta.

Greg Maddux (2-0) allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings, struck out one and walked one. He is 2-0 in three starts at Coors Field with a 7.81 earned-run average.

Pedro Astacio (0-2) dropped to 2-11 against the Braves, allowing six runs and eight hits in three innings, including the home runs by Jordan and Andruw Jones.

Mike DeJean was tagged for seven runs--six earned--and six hits without getting an out in the ninth. Bobby Jones and Robert Ramirez allowed three runs each, and Jerry DiPoto gave up a run.

Todd Helton drove in three runs for Colorado with a pair of singles, and Darryl Hamilton was four for five.

Atlanta took a 2-0 lead in the first on Chipper Jones’ two-out double and Jordan’s second homer in two days.

Helton singled in a run in the second, by Atlanta made it 6-1 in the third on Helton’s run-scoring error and Andruw Jones’ first homer of the season.

Colorado closed to 6-4 in the bottom half on Dante Bichette’s RBI single and Helton’s two-run single, but the Braves extended their lead to 9-4 in the fourth on Chipper Jones’ solo homer off Astacio and Simon’s two-run homer off Bobby Jones.

Andruw Jones had an RBI single in the eighth, and then came the big ninth. Hunter hit a two-run homer off DeJean, Jordan hit an RBI single and Ozzie Guillen followed with a two-run single. Jones then tripled off Ramirez, and Perez, Gerald Williams and Chipper Jones followed with RBI singles.

Larry Walker hit an RBI groundout in the bottom half.
