Rally to Target Sexual Violence
A “Take Back the Night” rally will be held tonight at Mission Park downtown to raise community awareness of sexual violence against women and children.
The rally will feature several speakers, including Anita Perez Ferguson, president of the National Women’s Political Caucus, self-defense demonstrations and a skit performed by Lideres Campesinas representatives.
Although this is only the second time such an event has been held in Ventura County, the tradition dates back to the early 1970s when activists marched down the streets where women had been raped to rally support for victim rights and educate the public about the issues surrounding sexual violence.
The rally, from 7 to 9 p.m., will culminate with a candlelight march through downtown.
