Cal State Fullerton catcher Craig Patterson will be sidelined two to three weeks with a broken thumb on his throwing hand after being hit by a foul tip in Sunday’s game against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Patterson has started the last six games, getting seven hits in 13 at-bats with six runs batted in. Jeff Gates, who has shared the position with Patterson this season, will take over at catcher in today’s 2 p.m. game at Loyola Marymount.

Gioconda Mendiola, a Times All-Orange County second team selection in girls’ basketball this season, has made an oral commitment to attend Washington, El Toro Coach Vincent Avitabile said.
Mendiola averaged 17.7 points and 7.2 assists to help the Chargers reach the Southern Section Division I-AA title game.
It also puts Washington in position to successfully recruit Mendiola’s younger sister, Giuliana, the county’s leading scorer (24.8 points, 7.5 assists) last season as a junior.
