COSTA MESA

Although City Council members favor a low-cost version of a proposed skateboard park in Lions Park, they said this week that they would be interested in seeking corporate sponsorships and private donations to help pay for a more elaborate design.

The council chose the $188,000 alternative over two more elaborate preliminary designs. Under the low-cost version, the park will be 10,000 square feet with rails and fun boxes. To keep costs down, the design will not have seating or viewing areas or a landscaped buffer between the skating area and other parts of Lions Park. That could change if additional money is raised to offset the cost of the more expensive designs, council members said.

Their ideas did not please a number of residents who expressed concerns about the location and the loss of green space.

“It’s going to reduce the use of that area by families for picnicking,” Bill Turpit said. “I would hate to see one use exclude those other uses.” Another resident, Mark Korando, said he was worried about losing already scarce green space in a heavily populated part of town. Korando said Lions Park had been anticipated as the “superpark” of the city and did not want to see the city pave it with concrete.
