Ripken Goes on DL Again

Cal Ripken was put on the disabled list because of a sore back, the second time this season the Baltimore Oriole third baseman has been disabled.

Ripken is one home run away from 400 and 32 hits shy of 3,000 in his career.

Atlanta Brave catcher Eddie Perez was suspended for four games and fined $1,000 and Manager Bobby Cox was suspended for two games and fined $5,000 over Friday’s brawl against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Perez will appeal his fine and continue to play. Cox will begin his suspension today.

Atlanta pitcher John Smoltz was fined $2,500 but was not suspended. No Phillies were penalized.

Curt Schilling, scheduled to start Tuesday for the Phillies at Miami, flew home to Philadelphia on learning that his pregnant wife was hospitalized. . . .
