The City Council this week narrowly approved an environmental impact report for a proposed Central Park sports complex, which would be built on top of an old landfill that produces methane gas.

The council promised to carefully monitor the potential dangers posed by toxins buried underneath the 45-acre site. Councilman Dave Sullivan, one of three opposing council members, said more study should be done before the city moves forward with the plans.

“There’s a dearth of documentation of this site, which scares the hell out of me,” he said.
