A coalition of American Muslims called Thursday for a worldwide boycott against Burger King because the chain opened a restaurant in a Jewish settlement on the occupied West Bank.

The West Bank has been at the center of the Middle East conflict ever since it was seized by Israel in the 1967 war.

“Our community views Burger King’s decision to become a party to illegal occupation with profound distaste,” Khalid Turaani, executive director of American Muslims for Jerusalem, told a news conference held across the street from a Burger King in this suburb of the nation’s capital.

Miami-based Burger King Corp. said in a statement that it is “sensitive to all nationalities, religions and cultures, and it is our policy to be respectful of the needs of each in providing access to our products.”

Spokeswoman Kim Miller said company officials “take the issue very seriously and we will try to resolve it.”
