Kubik Leads Fire to Win Over Rapids

Lubos Kubik scored two second-half goals to lead the Chicago Fire to a 5-0 victory Sunday over the Colorado Rapids before 11,275 at Chicago.

It was Chicago’s first victory in three games against the Rapids (15-6) this season and it moved them past the Galaxy into second place in the Western Conference, only six points behind Colorado.

Ante Razov scored the only goal of the first half in the 19th minute and Chicago (12-9) added four more in the second. Josh Wolff and Dema Kovalenko had the other goals.

Chicago goalkeeper Zach Thornton had two key saves in the second half to preserve the shutout, his fifth of the season.

Midway though the first half, Fire defender Jerzy Podbrozny and Coach Bob Bradley were ejected for arguing that Wolff was tripped on a Chicago scoring chance and no call was made.

D.C. 3, Tampa Bay 2--Tom Presthus made two saves in the shootout, including one in the final round, and Jaime Moreno scored the deciding goal in a shootout win before 18,754 at Washington.

D.C. United (14-7) outscored the Mutiny, 3-2, in the shootout after the teams deadlocked, 2-2, in regulation.

Steve Ralston and Josh Keller scored for Tampa Bay (9-13), and A.J. Wood and Roy Lassiter scored for D.C. United.

Columbus 2, Kansas City 1--Ansil Elcock scored in the 70th minute to give the Crew a victory before 16,639 at Columbus, Ohio.

Elcock’s third goal of the season, assisted on by Brian Maisonneuve and Brian McBride, improved the Crew’s record to 14-7. Kansas City is 6-16.
