Sauer Makes USTA Double Play

Erica Sauer of Somis advanced to the singles semifinals and doubles final with victories Thursday in the girls’ 14 division in the U.S. Tennis Assn. National Hardcourt Championships at South Fulton Tennis Center in College Park, Ga.

The fifth-seeded Sauer defeated second-seeded Shadisha Robinson of Ozone Park, N.Y., 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, in singles.

Sauer and Riza Zalameda of Los Angeles scored a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Caitlin Burke of Cedarburg, Wis., and Kaylan Caiati of Greendale, Wis.

Sauer and Zalameda, seeded second, will play top-seeded Judith DeVera of Carson and Lindsey Nelson of Orange in the doubles final today.

Sauer plays Jamea Jackson of Fairburn, Ga., singles.

* Justin Montgomery of Channel Islands Harbor advanced to the quarterfinals in the boys’ 14 division in the USTA National Hardcourt Championships with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Joseph Atas of Baltimore at McFarlin Tennis Center in San Antonio.

* Ryan Heinberg of Agoura Hills had his singles match rained out in the quarterfinals in the boys’ 16 division in the USTA National Hardcourt Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Fourth-seeded LeVar Harper-Griffith of Sarasota, Fla. and Andy Roddick of Boca Raton, Fla., beat No. 6-seeded Alex Bogomolov of Miami, Fla., and Travis Rettenmaier of Camarillo, 6-1, 6-2, in the doubles quarterfinals in the boys’ 18 division in the U.S. National Hardcourt tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas and Sam Warburg of Sacramento were rained out in doubles.

* Stephanie Berg and Jessica Leck of Harvard-Westlake earned a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lauren Connelly of Oklahoma City and Megan Racette of Urbandale, Iowa, in the round of 16 in the girls’ 16 division in the USTA National Hardcourt tournament at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Catrina and Christian Thompson of Las Vegas defeated Brooke Borisoff of Agoura Hills and Casey Cross of Rancho Mirage, 6-4, 6-2.

BOXING

* Heavyweight Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills will fight champion Monte “Two Guns” Barrett for the World Boxing Council Continental Americas heavyweight title Aug. 28 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Whitaker, 18-1 with 16 knockouts, suffered his first defeat in his last fight, a 10-round split decision against Lou Savarese in Atlantic City in March.

Barrett is undefeated in 21 fights with 12 knockouts.

BASEBALL

* Chris White, a junior pitcher, has transferred to Westlake High from Simi Valley.

White, who played on a club team with several Westlake players this summer, is the second prominent Simi Valley player to transfer to Westlake in the last two years.

Jesse Kozlowski, a senior, transferred a year ago and was the Warriors’ top pitcher last season.

BASKETBALL

* Mike May, an assistant coach with the Valley College men’s team the last three seasons and a former coach of the Hart High boys’ team, will be an assistant with the women’s team at Utah Valley State College in West Orem, Utah.

SOFTBALL

Cori Herbert of Hoover High pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts and the Southern California Athletics beat the New Jersey Ponies, 2-0, in a first-round game of elimination play Thursday in the Amateur Softball Assn. 18-and-under U.S. National Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Vanessa Monje of Baldwin Park High hit two run-scoring singles for Southern California, and Justina Kahaku of Canyon High and Sarah Hall of Calabasas High each had one hit for the Athletics (27-6, 3-0 in the national tournament).
