Fire Near Homes Extinguished
About 70 Los Angeles County firefighters quickly knocked down a fire Monday afternoon that burned 10 acres of brush and came close to homes.
The blaze broke out just after 1 p.m. near Garza Drive and Catala Avenue, but firefighters kept flames from burning the nearby structures, said Inspector Mark Tolbert of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Firefighters had the two-alarm fire under control by 2 p.m., with help from three water-dropping helicopters, Tolbert said.
Catala Avenue resident Yvonne Day was sewing in her bedroom when she noticed smoke and ashes floating past the window. She walked outside and watched as fire crews battled the blaze.
“If you live up here, you start to get used to it,” said Day, 62, who has lived in her home for 23 years. “I’m just glad the firemen have been able to save our homes every time.”
Investigators are still searching for the cause of the fire, Tolbert said.
