L.A. County Arts Commission Awards $1.6 Million in Grants to Nonprofit Groups

The L.A. County Arts Commission has announced more than $1.6 million in 1999-2000 grants to 154 nonprofit arts organizations.

The dollar amount is up 26% from the previous year and sets a record for grants given by the commission.

The largest portion of the grants--$705,000--went to mid-size organizations with budgets of between $100,000 and $800,000.

Grantees include Los Angeles Philharmonic ($79,208), Los Angeles Opera ($49,875), Santa Monica Museum of Art ($35,417), Museum of Contemporary Art ($30,894), Palos Verdes Community Arts Assn. ($30,770), A Noise Within ($28,453), Autry Museum of Western Heritage ($24,194), East West Players ($22,126), Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles ($18,443), Japanese American Cultural and Community Center ($17,797), Skirball Cultural Center ($17,779), Lula Washington Contemporary Dance Foundation ($17,682), American Film Institute ($16,774), Plaza de la Raza ($16,669), Young Musicians Foundation ($16,602), Odyssey Theatre Foundation ($15,400), Geffen Playhouse ($15,068) and American Youth Symphony ($14,005).
