A 40-year-old mechanic was crushed to death Friday while working 200 feet above ground on a cargo crane in the Port of Long Beach, firefighters reported.

The accident happened at 700 Hanjin Way in the Hanjin terminal about 2:10 p.m., said Mike Robideaux of the Long Beach Fire Department. Port officials said the terminal was shut down pending an investigation of the death.

The San Pedro man, who was working for Pacific Crane Maintenance Co., was lubricating parts of the crane when the operator’s cab moved and pinned him against the steel framing, firefighters said.
