Whisenant Signs With San Diego

Left-handed pitcher Matt Whisenant, who played at La Canada High and Glendale College, signed Friday with the San Diego Padres. He was released earlier this week by the Kansas City Royals.

Whisenant, an 18th-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1989, made 48 appearances for the Royals this season, posting a 4-4 record and 6.35 earned-run average. He had one save.

* Michael Falco of Agoura High, Kevin Howard of Westlake, Kameron Loe of Granada Hills and Leo Rosales of Reseda have been selected to the California Baseball Coaches Assn. South All-State team.

The team is comprised of 1999 seniors from the San Diego, Southern and Los Angeles sections.

MEMORIAL

* Funeral services for Paul Sutton, longtime coach and athletic director at Providence High, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at St. Finbar Catholic Church, 2010 W. Olive in Burbank, with a reception to follow at Providence.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to an educational trust for Sutton’s children and a fund for a proposed activity center to honor Sutton at Providence. Information: (818) 846-8141.
