Sheriff’s deputies launched an extensive search for a group of four mountain bikers Sunday night after they failed to return from a 25-mile excursion through the San Gabriel Mountains, authorities said.

Two men and two women departed about 8:30 a.m. for a ride through Little Tujunga Canyon north of Sunland, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Steven Toly.

When they failed to return around 3 p.m., friends became concerned and called authorities, who reported them missing three hours later.

Toly said the mountain bikers were experienced but were not familiar with the terrain. The Sheriff’s Department sent at least five rescue teams to search for the group.

The bikers were from the Burbank area, Toly said. He did not have further information on their identities.

“There’s all kinds of trails up there, and there’s all kinds of fire roads,” Toly said. “One wrong turn and they could end up in a completely different area.”

Toly said the search would continue through the night.

“It’s a large area to check,” he added.
