Saluting a studio, John Mauceri conducts his Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in “Universal Night at the Movies” at Hollywood Bowl. The band will play film music by Silvestri, Raye, Waxman, Kern, Mancini, Grusin, Gounod, Herrmann, North, Horner, Barry, Williams and others.

The American Film Institute has teamed with the city of Pasadena and the One Colorado organization for the second annual “Summer Shorts at One Colorado,” an outdoor, short-film festival that will take place over three evenings. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m., original short films by AFI students will be projected onto the exterior wall of a historic two-story building in the One Colorado courtyard in Old Pasadena. Many of the filmmakers will attend the screenings and talk to filmgoers. The opening-night program includes a post-screening reception sponsored and hosted by Il Fornaio.

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture hosts an evening of film, art and architecture at Action Space as Judith Ammann’s film “Henry Rollins, (Sort of) a Portrait ‘83-’89” screens. The program also includes recent photographs by Karin Geiger and “Houses Without Qualities,” a lecture by MAK architect in residence Michael Wallraff.

Stunning South African-born actress Charlize Theron stars in New Line Cinema’s psychological thriller “The Astronaut’s Wife” in the title role as a woman whose marriage, and life, become a maelstrom of confusion and doubt when her astronaut husband (Johnny Depp) returns from a space mission that is shrouded in mystery. The film is written and directed by Rand Ravich.

* “The Astronaut’s Wife,” rated R for violence, language and a strong scene of sexuality, opens Friday in general release.

8 pm: Pop Music

Ricky Martin might be the golden boy of Latin crossover, but when it comes to crossing genres there’s nobody like tejano patriarch Little Joe Hernandez. The Temple, Texas, native and his band La Familia happily incorporate everything from Mexican folk music to R&B; to country to big band to polka. With four decades of music-making under his belt, Little Joe is frequently likened to Willie Nelson.
