Pepperdine lost the opener of its Sparkletts Invitational on Saturday to North Carolina Charlotte, 80-74, then defeated Colorado State, 67-57, in the consolation game. Center Nick Sheppard scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the two games. Guard Brandon Armstrong leads the Waves with a 13.8 scoring average, and forward Kelvin Gibbs averages 11 points and 9.8 rebounds. Kansas defeated Pepperdine, 62-55, last season in the John Wooden Classic.
