PIGSKIN PROPHECIES

Share

Only twice in 12 weeks has The Prophet slipped up and been defeated by one of his guests. A few weeks ago, Mickey Flynn, known as “The Ghost of La Palma Park” during his career as an Anaheim High running back, did the trick. Record-setting rusher . . . Orange County Hall of Famer . . . I can live with that. The other: Ramona Rapley, Trabuco Hills High booster and luckiest woman on the face of the earth. And now, the rematch! Added to the mix this week are a high school playoff game from outside the county, a community college bowl game and an NAIA playoff game. Buckle that chin strap and tighten those laces Ramona!

GAME OF THE WEEK (5 points)

Kennedy at Newport Harbor, Friday

THE PROPHET SAYS: Kennedy Coach Mitch Olson knows a thing or two about good running backs--he was a pretty good one himself at Los Alamitos during the late 1970s. So he knows his team is in tough against Newport Harbor. The Sailors’ Andre Stewart averaged better than 152.5 yards rushing during the regular season, and during the playoffs his average is 234.5. Newport Harbor, 24-14.

RAMONA SAYS: Newport Harbor has come a long way over the last few years. All I can say is, ain’t no stopping them now. Newport Harbor, 28-14.

OTHER TOP GAMES (each 3 points)

Rialto Eisenhower vs. Mater Dei at Santa Ana Stadium, Friday.

THE PROPHET SAYS: Alemany Coach Jim Bonds, a former UCLA quarterback, had this to say after his team lost, 45-14, to the Monarchs last week: “I think [Mater Dei] can play with a lot of junior college teams.” And probably beat a couple. Eisenhower is good. But not that good. Mater Dei, 31-14.

RAMONA SAYS: Well, most folks, especially the media, know all too well how I feel about Mater Dei. So I won’t go there. I like Ike. Eisenhower, 36-33.

Los Alamitos vs. Long Beach Poly at Veterans Stadium, Friday

THE PROPHET SAYS: How’s this for a prediction: Poly will win the Division I title . . . next year. Many of the Jackrabbits’ top players are sophomores, including running back Hershel Dennis. But Poly, though top-seeded and undefeated, isn’t quite ready to play in a championship game, and Los Alamitos kicker Chris Kluwe could be the difference for the second week in a row. Upset special: Los Alamitos, 23-20.

RAMONA SAYS: Now this is one game I’d love to see. Anybody have a ticket? After seeing many of the Poly players at various combines last summer, I have to go with the Jackrabbits. Poly, 28-21.

Loara at Irvine, Friday

THE PROPHET SAYS: I hear Irvine Coach Terry Henigan is an avid reader of The Prophet, and that he was extremely, uh, “disappointed” (family newspaper version) to read here last week that his Vaqueros would be falling to top-seeded Mayfair. What can I say, coach? I’m a front-runner! Next week, I’ll be tabbing you to win the Division VI title. Irvine, 19-14.

RAMONA SAYS: The son of a co-worker was upset that The Prophet predicted Irvine would lose last week. I thought I’d set the record straight this week. Irvine, 21-17.

Brea Olinda at Western, Friday

THE PROPHET SAYS: Western is explosive when playing at full strength, and the Pioneers have been at their best in the playoffs. As for Brea Olinda, the ‘Cats are none too disappointed at this shot for a rematch. A 21-21 tie against Orange League-rival Western in Week 6 is the only blemish on their otherwise perfect record. Brea Olinda, 28-14.

RAMONA SAYS: Didn’t these two play each other during the regular season? Now, if one of these teams were playing my Mustangs, you know there’d be a game somewhere. Western, 28-7.

THE REST (1 point each)

* La Verne Bonita vs. San Dimas at Citrus College, Friday: The Prophet: Glenn Davis is a Bonita graduate and he went on to win the Heisman Trophy. Now The Times High School Player of the Year award is named after him. Good enough for me. Bonita, 24-17. Ramona: San Dimas, 17-14.

* Santa Ana College at Cerritos College, Strawberry Bowl, Saturday: The Prophet: Cerritos can’t pass and won’t be able to run. Santa Ana can run but will win because quarterback Grant Wagner will have a big game. Santa Ana, 24-15. Ramona: Cerritos, 24-23.

* Georgetown College (Ky.) at Azusa Pacific, NAIA semifinal, Saturday: The Prophet: You just know that any team with a 300-pound quarterback is tough around the goal line. Azusa Pacific, 31-24. Ramona: Georgetown, 17-12.
