Aaron Flowers, the most prolific quarterback in Cal State Northridge history, has made quick strides as an assistant coach.

Flowers, the Matadors’ quarterbacks coach, might soon find himself coaching for another team.

Northridge’s career leader with 6,766 yards passing has had discussions with Mike Kramer, who left Eastern Washington to become coach at Montana State.

Jeff Kearin, Northridge’s interim coach, said Flowers is coveted among Big Sky Conference coaches and likely will move rapidly up the coaching ranks.

For his part, Flowers said rumors of his departure are premature.

“We’ve talked but I haven’t heard anything in the last two or three weeks,” Flowers said. “About four or five dominoes need to fall. Right now, I don’t even want to think about it. I just want to focus on recruiting.”

Still, Flowers, who also holds school records with 54 touchdown passes and 502 completions, said any offer would be tempting.

“It would be a big decision to leave,” he said. “But it’s flattering. I don’t know what I did to [Kramer], but he really likes me.”

Jerome Souers, who guided Northern Arizona to its first playoff appearance since 1996, has been selected Big Sky football coach of the year.

Souers, a former Montana assistant, led the Lumberjacks to an 8-3 record--including five consecutive victories to end the regular season--and second-place conference finish.
