The City Council on Tuesday sent a letter to Caltrans requesting that a project to widen Ortega Highway between Rancho Viejo Road and Interstate 5 be completed by Dec. 20.

Council members said the project has caused hardships for residents and businesses in the area. The $1.9-million project, which began in late June, will create an additional access lane to Interstate 5 for northbound traffic and an extra right-turn lane for eastbound motorists at Rancho Viejo Road.

The city is urging Caltrans to increase the number of work crews, and work around the clock to meet the deadline. The project is jointly funded by the city and Caltrans.
