An 82-year-old Torrance man in failing health fatally shot his wife in the head Saturday before shooting himself in the chest, police said.

Both were taken to Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where the wife, also 82, was pronounced dead at 4:55 p.m., said Torrance Police Lt. Steve Gilliam.

Gilliam said the man had been in surgery and that his condition was unknown late Saturday.

The victims’ names were being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Gilliam said the man called Torrance police about 4:10 p.m. and told them to come to his house in the 2800 block of 167th Street, and that he had left the front door open.

“He told us he’d just shot his wife and then [shot] himself,” Gilliam said.

The man said he had just suffered a stroke, and indications at the scene were that he and his wife were in poor health, police said.

When police and paramedics arrived, they found the man and his wife in the living room and a .38-caliber revolver nearby.
