Sewage Spills Into Ventura Keys Area

Share

City officials posted warning signs Monday along several areas surrounding the Ventura Keys after as much as 600 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the Bayshore storm drain.

The sewage discharged into the storm drain, which flows into the Ventura Keys at Peninsula Street and Bayshore Avenue, about 9 a.m. Monday, according to the county’s Environmental Health Division.

The cause of the spill was still unknown Monday evening.

The health division is advising the public to avoid contact with water in the Ventura Keys along Bayshore Avenue until the warning signs have been removed. The spill, however, has not prompted the closure of any nearby beaches.

“The amount of sewage spilled was small enough we feel we only need to post signs in the immediate area, about 100 yards on either side,” said Richard Hague, coordinator with the health division.

Ventura city officials will test water for bacteria levels for the next two to three days, Hague said.
