Seraphs Dominate Awards

Adrian Ayala, Tucker Bennett and David Garza of St. Bonaventure High were singled out for awards on the All-Ventura County Small Schools Division team selected by the county’s football coaches.

Ayala was selected offensive lineman of the year, Bennett was the defensive lineman of the year and Garza was the defensive back of the year.

Sophomore Lorenzo Booker of St. Bonaventure and senior Jessie Hawkins of Nordhoff were selected offensive backs of the year.

The coaches at Oak Park and Santa Paula were selected as staffs of the year.

St. Bonaventure (14-0), Southern Section Division XII champion, had 11 players selected to the team.

Nordhoff had eight players on the squad and six Santa Paula players were selected.

* Kicker Ryan Geisler of Cal Lutheran was selected to the NCAA Division III Coaches’ All-American team.

Geisler, a junior from Camarillo High, made 14 of 18 field-goal attempts.

BASEBALL

* Mike Schultz, a right-handed pitcher from Loyola Marymount who attended Cleveland High, is ranked No. 20 by Baseball America among college prospects who are eligible for the amateur draft in June.

Schultz, a 6-foot-8 junior, is 16-8 in two seasons with the Lions

GOLF

* Moorpark College plans to field a women’s team for the first time in the fall of 2000, and the school will reinstate men’s golf in the spring of 2001.

Moorpark won the state community college men’s golf title in 1981, but the sport has not been played in recent years.

Will Thurston, a beginning and intermediate golf class instructor at the school, will coach both teams, with former PGA professional Russ Buford serving as an assistant.

* The Pete Kokon Open in honor of former sportswriter Pete Kokon is Feb. 14 at Woodland Hills Country Club.

The event, sponsored by Pierce College’s baseball program, includes a round of golf, cart, lunch and dinner. Cost is $125.
