Fullerton’s Garman Sets Retirement Date

Cal State Fullerton’s Judi Garman, the winningest Division I softball coach in NCAA history who announced in June that she was retiring as Titan coach, said Monday she will leave the university March 27.

Garman’s former assistant coach, Michelle Gromacki, will be the Titans’ interim coach and Garman will be Gromacki’s administrative assistant beginning Jan. 3.

Garman’s teams went 913-376-4 in 20 seasons and won the 1986 NCAA title. She started Fullerton’s program in 1980.

SOCCER

Orange County Zodiac forward Steve Patterson, a former Foothill High player, was selected to the 20-man Umbro Select USL All-Star team. Patterson, one of 12 A-League players chosen to the team, will play with the all-star team Feb. 5 against a group of foreign MLS prospects on Feb. 5 in Ft. Lauderdale. The USL roster will also consist of four Division 3 players and four Premier Development players.

TENNIS

The Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships will return to the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs next year, April 14-22. More than 600 of the top girls and boys players in 14, 16 and 18-year old divisions will compete in the event, which took a one-year hiatus in Miami last year. The champions of the 18s division will receive wild cards into $50,000 Challenger events and the ATP Mercedez-Benz Cup.

VOLLEYBALL

Kelly Brockman, the Sunset League’s co-MVP in girls’ volleyball, committed to Cal State Northridge, Huntington Beach Coach Isaac Owens said. Brockman, a 6-foot middle blocker, is a second-team Times all-county selection.
