Suspect Arrested in Slaying of Woman
One week after a 62-year-old Artesia woman was mysteriously shot to death in her own driveway, sheriff’s investigators arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with her murder.
Aaron John Smith, of Artesia, was arrested Tuesday evening for parole violations and on suspicion of murder.
Investigators say they believe Smith is the man who shot Carmen Vasquez, but they would not say what his motive was in the killing.
Smith has not been charged in the crime.
Vasquez was getting into her car around 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8 when she was shot several times in the upper body, according to sheriff’s officials.
Her husband ran out of the couple’s house and found his wife lying in the driveway, bleeding. She died a short time later at a local hospital.
