‘Colors of Christmas’ Show a Pleasant Cerritos Tradition

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The cast of performers may change, but the annual “Colors of Christmas” show at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts has become a familiar seasonal event, its individual elements as predictable as the arrival of Santa Claus.

On Thursday, for example, in the opening performance of a four-night run, the show once again featured Peabo Bryson, who has starred in every “Colors” presentation since 1992. His companions were James Ingram, making his fourth appearance; Deniece Williams in her second; and Dionne Warwick in her debut.

Once again, the accompaniment was provided by a full orchestra (conducted by Gail Deadrick) with participation by the Maranatha Community Choir. And in a recapitulated highlight from previous years, several young people were brought on stage to share in the performance of one of the songs--this time “A Whole New World” by Bryson and Williams.

“Colors’ ” celebration of Christmas is underscored with the pop rhythms of the ‘80s and ‘90s, and framed in an atmosphere of pleasant conviviality. And each of the artists did their share in contributing to the festivities.

Bryson’s warm and amiable qualities were particularly engaging as he strolled through the audience, reminiscing about family life and singing tunes such as “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “This Christmas.”

Ingram was touching with the lovely “Who Would Imagine a King,” and spirited with a gospel-driven rendering of “Silent Night.” Warwick added “The Christmas Song” and a medley of her Bacharach-David hits. And Williams’ penetrating voice soared through “Oh Holy Night” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

The capacity audience loved every minute of it, clapping their hands, singing along with some of the choruses and clearly enjoying an event that has quickly become a Cerritos holiday tradition.
