When “Mad Max” opened in 1979, it ushered in a new genre of action-adventure movies featuring loner antiheroes and made a star out of a little-known Australian actor named Mel Gibson. The Nuart is screening a new 35-millimeter print of director George Miller’s original version of the film, which was released in Australia but has been rarely seen in the States. The original U.S. release was dubbed with the voices of American actors.

Featuring more than 145 masks detailing humans, animals and other supernatural creatures, the masks present a historical look at 10 distinct First Nations tribes that inhabit the waterways stretching from the northern part of Washington to southeastern Alaska.
