IRVINE
A group of consumer rights activists is pushing for a local ballot initiative that would limit financial contributions to elected officials in Irvine.
In January, about 50 volunteers will begin gathering signatures for “The Taxpayer Protection Amendment of 2000.”
Similar groups in five other California cities--San Francisco, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Vista and Claremont--also are participating in the initiative drive.
The six cities were chosen to reflect the state’s geographical and political makeup, project officials said.
The proposal would prohibit council members from accepting campaign contributions, future employment or gifts from individuals or organizations that have benefited as a result of the official’s actions. The embargo on the official would end one year after leaving elected office.
