Katy O’Brien has always been a consistent free-throw shooter, usually making about 70%.
But Ventura High’s point guard wasn’t satisfied with just being consistent.
“That’s one thing I really wanted to work on since the off-season and improve,” she said.
Mission accomplished. O’Brien has made 30 of 31 free-throw attempts.
Ventura, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, made 13 of 16 free throws on Monday in a 58-48 victory over two-time Division I-AA champion Peninsula in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.
Peninsula made only 14 of 24 free throws.
“I think that’s the difference between winning and losing in tournaments like these,” Coach Glenn Gray II said. “Teams that miss their free throws will lose. The ones that make them will usually win.”
