Young Equestrians Prepare for Parade

The youngest equestrians in the upcoming Rose Parade will get lessons next week from a veteran of the event on how to ride safely while waving and smiling to a crowd.

From Tuesday through Friday, the eight children will meet at Burbank’s L.A. Equestrian Center with instructor Bob Tanner, who also provided the horses they will ride, according to the city Department of Recreation and Parks.

The children, including some from Canoga Park, North Hollywood and Tujunga, were chosen for the parade based on their outstanding participation in the Department of Recreation and Parks’ WOW (Wonderful Outdoor World) program, which introduces urban children to the outdoors through an overnight camping experience in their local city park, city officials said.

The children spent the past several months training for the parade, making a three-day horseback trip into the Sierra Nevada Mountains during the summer.
